The Legal Pact’s Latest Comments on the UN’s ‘Pact for the Future’

The ‘Pact for the Future’ is a nascent globally agreed text that will set a new agenda for issues such as development and peace and security at the international level. The first draft of ‘Pact for the Future’ has recently been published. You can read it here. This draft will continually be revised until a final version is agreed upon later this year.

Legal Pact’s comments on the first draft of this document highlight the existing gaps in the ‘Pact for the Future.’

Notably this first draft of ‘Pact for the Future’ lacks attention to judicially enforceable environmental and human rights and the rule of law. Legal Pact for the Future is working at diplomatic and grassroots levels to ensure that conversations surrounding enforceable rights for people and nature, on earth and in outer space, are central to Summit of the Future.

Our work includes publishing commentary and input, and forming coalitions of stakeholders that support the rule of law. The heart of our strategy is linking people, NGOs, businesses and governments to show there is considerable support behind the rule of law as the unifying theme of global governance.

We cannot underestimate the importance of ensuring the rule of law is mainstreamed through attempts to reform the international governance architecture. The support of people, NGOs, businesses, and government is absolutely crucial in helping us ensure enforceable rights are central to reform attempts.
